The
Valleys of Thieves are
situated between the second largest glacier, Langjokull and the free
standing, ice covered Mt. Hrutafell.
The name is derived from a few thieves, who hid there from justice
in the past.
The valleys are
almost closed at their mouth by the low Mt. Thverfell.
They are discharged by River Thjofadalaa, which spills into River
Fulakvisl. A mountain track
for 4wd vehicles lies all the way to the tourist hut (built in 1939),
which accommodates 10-12 people. This
track is accessible from the geothermal Hveravellir area, where there are
two tourist huts and a weather observation station.
The Thjofadalir hut is a link on the hiking route
across the Kjolur
area. |
