The
town Thorlakshofn was named after the
patron saint of the country. It has one of
three
existing harbours of the south coast
(2009). A new ferry harbour is on the south
coast, very close to the Westman Iclands. The
third one is the estuary harbour of the village Hofn in the Southeast.
Thorlakshofn is the export harbour for the Southwestern Lowlands and the
harbour for the Westman Islands' car ferry to 2010.
The most important exports are fish products and rhyolite pumice.
The town is among the most important fishing and fish processing towns
of the country. The distance from the capital is about 51 km.
