Flight to Gjogur
Gjogur is an old, renowned fishing hamlet at the mouth of the Reykjafiord bay. It is best know for its shark fisheries. Sometimes 15 open rowboats left at the same time to spend a few days on the ocean to catch sharks. Gjogur is one of the many totally abandoned communities in this part of the country, but a bit further north the farm Finnbogastadir offers accommodations for the travellers in the area during summer.
The Co-operative Society has a branch shop in Nordurfiord on the bay Trekyllisvik and that is where the official road system of the Strandir District ends. The only regular connections with the outside world during winter are the scheduled post flights to Gjogur. A short distance away from the airstrip there are a few thermal springs well worth inspecting. Bathing is not permitted there, but there is a public swimming pool at Krossnes, a bit further north. The distance from the capital is 371 km and from Holmavik 98 km.
