The Álftavatn hut sleeps 10 people. This cosy house has a veranda, offering guests the best possible mountain experience.
The hut is ca 30 m2 in total and consists of an open space for the kitchen and sleeping area (20 m2) and a separate hall/anteroom and bathroom with a WC (10 m2). The sleeping area has bunkers in two rows of five. The hut is well equipped with cutlery for 12 people along with the main kitchen utensils, pots and pans, a gas stove with two hobs, a gas heater and shoe shelves and pegs for wet clothes. The main safety tools in the hut are a fire extinguisher, a fire blanket, a smoke detector and a gas detector.
Description of the area:

Álftavatn is close to the middle of Laugavegur, the hiking trail between Landmannalaugar and Þórsmörk. The distance from Landmannalaugar to Álftavatn is 23 km and from Álftavatn to Þórsmörk is 33 km.

The huts at Álftavatn are north of the lake on a level gravel field. A good campsite sits south of the huts, a little closer to the lake.

The track to Álftavatn is very difficult to drive and usually only accessible to modified trucks on at least 33 inch tires. This is mostly due to the area being framed in by three rivers: Markarfljót in the north and Bláfjallakvísl and Kaldaklofskvísl in the south. When the water level rises in the rivers they can become completely impassable for vehicles for a number of days. There are no bridges for vehicles to cross but Kaldaklofskvísl has a footbridge and there is a good ford for hikers in Bláfjallakvísl.

If you intend to hike Laugavegur in two days, Álftavatn is the best overnight option since it is roughly halfway.

For centuries Fjallabak syðra, the track that runs through Álftavatn, was one of the main transportation routes between the counties of Skaftafell and the southwest corner of Iceland where most trade took place. There are many stories of travellers on Fjallabak syðra in olden times and some never returned.

The hut is rented out for 70.000 ISK per night and is available from 14:00 on day of arrival until 12:00 the next day.

The hut is only rented out to groups and shall be left in the same condition as it was upon arrival. The hut is equipped with cleaning tools and detergents.

Guests receive a code to access the key box outside the hut. The full rental fee shall be paid upon booking but 80% will be refunded if the booking is cancelled 30 days or more prior to date of arrival. When cancelling with a shorter notice the fee is not refundable unless the hut is rented out to other guests. The cancelling party shall bear the cost if any due to refunds.
