River Svarfadardalsa is quite voluminous but calm and slow flowing through its estuaries.  It regularly floods the lower regions and leaves behind fertile soil on the valley floor.  The cultivable areas of the valley did not escape drainage by ditches and a great change to the whole ecosystem of the valley.

In 1972 the lower part of the river along with its banks, estuaries and islets was declared an inviolate nature reserve.  Its nature is not to be tampered with in any way.  Scientists have gathered and are still gathering precious data from the area and nature lovers are granted access to watch the bird life and other natural phenomena.
