The Snowy Mountain (Sierra Nevada) is the highest freestanding mountain of the country (1833m). It is very prominent from many directions and the view from its top is excellent on a fine day. It is somewhat cone shaped, an ancient central volcano, created rather late during the ice age. It has been dormant for at least 10 thousand years and is probably extinct. It is considered to be the youngest volcano of the eastern part of the country. Because of its height, its highest lying snow patches do not disappear during summer. The mountain is relatively easy to climb from the Tourist Associationís hut, Snaefellsskali. The moorland area west of the mountain, north of the edge of the Vatnajokull icecap and east of the glacial river Jokulsa a Bru is called Vesturoraefi.

It and the area west of the glacial river are the main breeding and feeding areas of the reindeer. One of the most interesting hiking areas could start from the hut, across the glacier snout Eyjabakkajokull to the hut at the foot of the mountain Geldingafell and from there further south across the beautiful Lonsoraefi highlands. Many magnificent ice caves have been discovered at the edge of the Eyjabakkajokull.
