Town Mosfellsbaer

This town enjoys thermal activity and quite a few greenhouses have been built there. Since 1933 it has supplied the capital area with natural hot water for house heating, swimming pools etc. Every day thousands of tons of hot water are pumped through the pipelines from more than 100 boreholes in the Mosfellsbaer mountains.

The Nobel Prize laureate for literature in 1955, Halldor Kiljan Laxnes (1902-1998), lived at his home Gljufrasteinn in the Mosfell County, he was the honorary citizen of the town. He lived there all his life and based some of his novels on his experiences and impressions of his surroundings.

A few businesses are located in town, among them chicken and turkey farms, as well as a woolen factory and its outlet, which has always attacted thousands of travellers because of its great selection and reasonable prices. The mountainous area around the town is ideal for walks and hikes, skiing and fishing for trout and char in the small lakes.Mosfellsbaer
